This book analyzes the trajectory of the journalist Mario Pinto Serva and seeks to understand his itinerary in the educational field of São Paulo in the 1910s and 1920s. It is a mapping and analysis of the ideas presented by the publicist in one of his main spaces of activity, the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, and in his book A Educação Nacional, from 1924. , with emphasis on the Nationalist League of São Paulo and the events of the Brazilian Association of Education. In the path of this investigation, central questions are raised and answered: what is the relationship between civic and professional associations in the configuration of the educational field? How did the approach between the columnist and the prominent figures in the São Paulo educational scene take place? Were your ideas and proposals in line with the discourses of field agents? What competences did the columnist attribute to schools, intellectuals and the State with regard to public education policies? Along the way, the author contributes to the debate about the configuration of professional identities in the educational field of São Paulo during the First Republic (1889 -1930). By reinforcing the importance of the periodical press as a source of research, the book also brings up relevant themes that can encourage further studies on intellectuals in the area of the History of Education in Brazil.
