If services that are of central importance for social participation and democracy are to remain sufficiently available, workplaces in the service sector must be at least as attractive as those in others. This book shows that working for the public good is indeed perceived as attractive by employees. However, this is limited by severe occupational stresses and strains that could often be avoided if framework conditions were changed. Furthermore, in terms of equivalent living conditions, the regional distribution of services offered is key. In the course of demographic change, the provision of socially necessary services in Germany is at risk in the coming decades, at least locally̧—conducting ‘business as usual’ will not be enough.
