Napoli e Amsterdam : relazioni, negoziazioni e traffici nel XVIII secolo

The volume focuses on the political and economic relations between the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily and the Dutch Republic in Eighteenth century. The starting point is the commercial treaty signed by the two States in 1753. Thanks to various Neapolitan and Dutch sources, the study reconstructs the political and commercial interests that underpinned the agreement, highlighting the importance of the relationships with Dutch Republic in Charles of Bourbon’s “politica dei trattati”. Through the analysis of the relations between a modest Mediterranean State and a mercantilist Power of the time (albeit in decline), the volume explores the Neapolitan “strategy” to find its own space amidst the clashes between the major commercial Powers of the period. By exanimating the impact of commercial treaty on the Dutch trades in Southern Italy, the book provides an initial approach to studying economic exchanges between the Dutch Republic and Naples. This lays the groundwork for a broader understanding of the relationships between Southern Italy and Northern Europe in the Eighteenth century, a topic on which much remains to be explored.
