The year following the death of Mexican poetess Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Count Joseph Zatrilla y Vico of Villasalto published Poema heroico al merecido aplauso del único oráculo de las musas (1696) in her eulogy. This second work by the Sardinian nobleman, who had already
tried his hand at literary composition with the 'novel' Engaños y desengaños del profano amor (1687-1688), constitutes one of the earliest writings in praise of sor Juana in the entire Hispanic world, but has only recently aroused the interest of critics.
The present contribution offers the critical edition of the Poema heroico and the facing Italian translation. The text of the work is preceded by an introductory study that aims to situate the poem in its literary-historical context, provide an interpretation of the most relevant formal and content aspects (structure, style, themes), investigate possible sources and outline a picture of its reception.
