Analysis of the economic situation based on income inequality and poverty is a very important issue that requires constant monitoring. In Poland, much attention is paid to the creation of numerous programmes aimed at increasing the quality of life, which leads, among others, to an income increase within various social groups; however, there is no systemic assessment of the effects of the policy pursued. This publication will to some extent fill this gap. The statistical analysis of changes in the distribution of income was carried out for the Łódź Voivodeship, which in the period 2016-2020 was exposed to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the one hand, and to rapid economic growth and the implementation of numerous social programmes on the other. An in-depth analysis of income distribution in the Łódź Voivodeship, based on comparisons both over time and by socio-economic groups of households, was possible thanks to the use of statistical methods based on empirical and theoretical distributions. To describe income distributions, all the most frequently used theoretical distributions have been applied: the log-normal, Dagum, Singha-Maddala and Pareto distributions. Concentration curves and the Gini and Zenga coefficients, quintile and decile dispersion ratios as well as the maximum equalisation index were used to analyse income inequality. Among the measures of poverty, the following measures were considered: the at-risk-of-poverty rate, the poverty gap index and the poverty severity index. The phenomenon of richness has been described using the richness threshold and the corresponding incidence index. The analysis was supplemented with a graphical presentation of the results, which allows for the assessment of changes that have occurred in the entire distribution in the Łódź Voivodeship against the background of the country.
