Taking animal rights seriously has far-reaching theoretical implications for the justification of illegal political disobedience. Animal rights approaches, the study argues, are in a difficult tension with liberal notions of the legitimate use of coercion. Against this background, the study concludes by asking what responsibilities can be ascribed to a liberal society beyond a narrow perspective of legitimacy. The author argues that the use of animals is to be understood as a possible dramatic evil, which gives rise to a responsibility to reflect seriously and critically on the treatment of animals in the long term.
