A obra apresenta uma história aparentemente comum sobre os encontros e desencontros entre John Marcher e May Bartram. Eles passaram os dez anos que se seguiram ao dia em que se conheceram sem notícias um do outro, até se reencontrarem ocasionalmente em Londres.
