The central thesis of this book is that the search for a "logical form" suitable for the needs of ontology is an operation of free construction rather than discovery. The idea is that we do not simply reveal the deep structure of our language but shape the expressive form that best renders our prior metaphysical intuitions. Starting from this premise, the volume proposes four different ways of thematizing the possibility and methods of ontology. These four essays share the same metaontological strategy, despite the multiplicity of references to authors and philosophical styles. The strategy stresses the contribution of our categorial frameworks and identifies the methods for constructing an ontology in the creation of a new ideal formulation of language for the purposes of philosophical investigation. Thus, it is discovered that ontology, instead of being eliminated through logical analysis of language, finds in the logical analysis of language its very possibility.
