In this book, Karina Zybina examines almost unknown works of church music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: his litany settings. Written in and for Salzburg, they show a striking affinity with compositions by his contemporaries, in particular his father Leopold, Anton Cajetan Adlgasser and Johann Michael Haydn, which is expressed in conventionalized harmonic-melodic formulas and a standardized structure. However, Mozart's litanies also display a 'typically Mozartian' tonal language and in some respects clearly transcend local habits. By juxtaposing Salzburg musical traditions with Mozart's wealth of ideas, his litanies provide a colorful portrait of the genre in the famous composer's oeuvre.
