The new National Cultural Property Protection Act is an object of many controversies. It has so far, however, been studied almost exclusively from a legal perspective. In this book, art historians and legal scholars work together on its history based for the first time on extensive archival studies and evaluate the law’s concept of nation and the implicit selection criteria for nationally valuable cultural goods. They identify recurring conflicts and develop suggestions as to the implementation and reform of the law.
