Chemnitz ist Europas Kulturhauptstadt des Jahres 2025. Seit den Ausschreitungen von 2018 wird sie allerdings vor allem mit dem Erstarken des Rechtsextremismus assoziiert. Die Auszeichnung bietet Chemnitz eine große Chance, das eigene Image zu korrigieren und bestehende Probleme zu bearbeiten. Vor diesem Hintergrund versammeln die Beiträger*innen vielfältige sozial- und kulturwissenschaftliche Analysen zu Chemnitz als Sozialraum. Daraus ergibt sich das Portrait einer oftmals unbekannten, aber nicht zuletzt symbolisch bedeutsamen und nun europaweit im Rampenlicht stehenden Stadt, die vielfältige Perspektiven jenseits bestehender Klischees vereint.
