Galt der freizeitliche Marathonlauf vor einigen Jahrzehnten noch als exotische und unvernünftige Angelegenheit, die kaum gesellschaftliche Anerkennung fand, so ist er inzwischen zum Sport der »vernünftigen Leute« und »gesellschaftlichen Leistungsträger« avanciert. Wie lässt sich das erklären? Roman Felde argumentiert, dass freizeitliches Marathonlaufen kein Sport ist, sondern als eine strukturell masochistische Kompensationspraxis verstanden werden kann. Als solche entspricht sie im Kern dem Muster einer Bewährung durch Unterwerfung und ist ursächlich eng mit den Strukturen moderner Erwerbsarbeit verknüpft.
