Originally written under a pen name, this extraordinary book by Danish aristocrat Karen Blixen is half memoir, half novel. The book tells, in a haunting lyrical prose, of the author’s two decades running a farm in Kenya, located at the foot of the Ngong Hills, just outside Nairobi. Throughout she shows a real empathy for the local people who work on her farm, aware that before European colonialists arrived the land would have belonged to them.
