A non-fiction account of a safari in East Africa in 1933 which Hemingway took, accompanied by his wife. Alongside the pleasure and sense of accomplishment which hunting obviously gave him, the author has lengthy discussions with his wife and fellow hunters on the merits of various authors, such as Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Flaubert. Showing considerable honesty Hemingway admits to feelings of intense jealousy when other hunters have more success than he does, even going so far as to denigrate one of the others as being merely lucky rather than skilful.
