Hong Kong is home to many archaeologically rich sites located behind beaches. Among them, Sha Po on Lamma Island has long attracted the attention of archaeologists. However, to date, no comprehensive scholarly study of the area has been published. Piecing Together Sha Po presents the first sustained, cross-period analysis of Sha Po’s multi-layered social landscape, which has accommodated various human activities for over 6,000 years. Drawing on decades of earlier fieldwork and extensive excavations conducted by Mick Atha and Kennis Yip between 2008 and 2010, the authors reconstruct the social history of Sha Po across different historical periods. Artifacts unearthed from the site, including some of the only known examples within Hong Kong, reveal how ancient Sha Po inhabitants interacted with their environment in diverse ways. Evidence of advanced craftsmanship in the Bronze Age, such as the production of quartz ornaments and metallurgical techniques, suggests a growing specialization in artisanal skills. At the same time, society became more complex and competitive. By the Six Dynasties to Tang Dynasty period, Sha Po had evolved into a government-controlled kiln-based salt production center. In the 19th century, its fishing and farming communities became key suppliers of food and fuel to urban Hong Kong. Through the lens of this unique archaeological site, Piecing Together Sha Po tells a compelling story of how humans continually reshape their ways of life.
