The present volume examines the collaboration between hearing sign language interpreters and their Deaf clientele. The study situates sign language interpreting within the broader frameworks of Translation Studies and accessible communication. Drawing on data from a large-scale survey of both groups, it empirically explores how respondents perceive the current state of sign language interpreting in Germany. How do interpreters adapt to the needs and expectations of their Deaf clients? How is interpreting quality assessed from the perspectives of both parties? The study highlights the challenges arising from the acute shortage of interpreters in Germany and identifies the good practices that have emerged in the interaction between interpreters as service providers and Deaf sign language users as clients and commissioning parties.
