The story of how Max Warburg became head of the family-owned bankhouse, although his brother was supposed to take over the business, was often told: When he was 12 years old, the one year older Aby offered Max his birthright for the promise to buy all the books Aby would ever need. Max accepted,and - as he later said - issued "the biggest blank cheque in my life". The paths of life of the two brothers spilt into different directions. Aby built his library into a research institute. Max developed M. M. Warburg & Co., thus the bankhouse becoming one of the most important private banks in Germany. At Simultaneously, they both pursued another goal: the foundation of the university. The brothers were among the early donors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation (Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung). It was all about "Hamburg's mental capacity" ("Hamburgs geistige Zahlungsfähigkeit").

Leading publishers and observers of the science publishing scene comment in essay form on key developments over the past century. The scale of the global research effort and its industrial organisation have resulted in substantial increases in the published volume, as well as new techniques for its handling. The former languages of science communication, like Latin and German, have given way to English. The domination of European science before WWII has been followed by large efforts in North America and the Far East. The roots of the National Library of Medicine lie in the US Army medical library, the US War effort gave rise to hypertext, and the US defense reaction to the Soviet Sputnik resulted in the Internet. The European invention of the Web has also changed the science publishing scene in the past five years. Some characteristic publishing enterprises, commercial and society owned, are described in a series of articles. These are followed by analysis of recent developments and possible changes to come. Functions of publishers, librarians and agents are brought into context. The future of publishing is currently being debated on open channels, while the historical dimension and professional input are sometimes lacking.

This study explores the practice of scientific enquiry as it took place in the eighteenth-century home. While histories of science have identified the genteel household as an important site for scientific experiment, they have tended to do so via biographies of important men of science. Using a wide range of historical source material, from household accounts and inventories to letters and print culture, this book investigates the tools within reach of early modern householders in their search for knowledge. It considers the under-explored question of the home as a site of knowledge production and does so by viewing scientific enquiry as one of many interrelated domestic practices. It shows that knowledge production and consumption were necessary facets of domestic life and that the eighteenth-century home generated practices that were integral to ‘Enlightenment’ enquiry.

The Diffusion Hydrodynamic Model (DHM), as presented in the 1987 USGS publication, was one of the first computational fluid dynamics computational programs based on the groundwater program MODFLOW, which evolved into the control volume modeling approach. Over the following decades, others developed similar computational programs that either used the methodology and approaches presented in the DHM directly or were its extensions that included additional components and capacities. Our goal is to demonstrate that the DHM, which was developed in an age preceding computer graphics/visualization tools, is as robust as any of the popular models that are currently used. Throughout History, networks of scientists and knowledge exchange have been formed, and scientific mobility has been promoted both at the level of the academy and at political level. In the 1940s the “Europe of mobility” began to be drawn through, among other things, the creation of centers of critical reflection, involving not only academics but also intellectuals and politicians, who would contribute to the design of a “Europe of Education” and, in a broad sense, of a Europe of Knowledge. Ever since climate change has been identified as one of the most significant challenges of humanity, climate change deniers have repeatedly tried to discredit the work of scientists. To show how these processes work, Maria M. Sojka examines three ideals about how science should operate. These ideals concern the understanding of uncertainties, the relationship between models and data, and the role of values in science. Their widespread presence in the public understanding of science makes it easy for political and industrial stakeholders to undermine inconvenient research. To address this issue, Sojka analyses the importance of tacit knowledge in scientific practice and the question of what defines an expert.

This nontraditional text arose from the conviction that science and engineering students would benefit from an introductory course which covers all of physics from a modern point of view. The text takes the perspective of a modern particle physicist and is based more on wave dynamics and relativity than on classical mechanics. The subject matter is split into two volumes of twelve chapters each. This is Volume 2, which covers:

• A treatment of electromagnetism which builds on relativity
• Atomic, nuclear, and particle physics
• Statistical mechanics and thermodynamics

The result is a conceptually challenging but mathematically simple text which can be covered in two semesters or three quarters without omitting any content. Such a course has been offered for over ten years at New Mexico Tech to incoming physics majors and other interested students who are well prepared in high school physics and mathematics

Is time travel just a confusing plot device deployed by science fiction authors and Hollywood filmmakers to amaze and amuse? Or might empirical data prompt a scientific hypothesis of time travel? Structured on a fascinating dialogue involving a distinguished physicist, Dr. Rufus, a physics graduate student and a computer scientist this book probes an experimentally supported hypothesis of backwards time travel – and in so doing addresses key metaphysical issues, such as causation, identity over time and free will. The setting is the Jefferson National Laboratory during a period of five days in 2010. Dr. Rufus’s experimental search for the psi-lepton and the resulting intractable data spurs the discussion on time travel. She and her two colleagues are pushed by their observations to address the grandfather paradox and other puzzles about backwards causation, with attention also given to causal loops, multi-dimensional time, and the prospect that only the present exists. Sensible solutions to the main puzzles emerge, ultimately advancing the case for time travel really being possible. A Time Travel Dialogue addresses the possibility of time travel, approaching familiar paradoxes in a rigorous, engaging, and fun manner. It follows in the long philosophical tradition of using dialogue to present philosophical ideas and arguments, but is ground breaking in its use of the dialogue format to introduce readers to the metaphysics of time travel, and is also distinctive in its use of lab results to drive philosophical analysis. The discussion of data that might decide whether time is one-dimensional (one timeline) or multi-dimensional (branching time) is especially novel.

Restrictions on academic freedom, persecution and armed conflict have forced many scholars into exile. So far, the professional trajectories of these scholars and their contributions to knowledge exchange have not been studied comprehensively. The contributors to this volume address the situations and networks of scholars in exile, the challenges they face in their host countries and the opportunities they use. These issues are highly relevant to discussions about the moral economies of higher education institutions and support programs. Although the contributions largely focus on Germany as a host country, they also offer telling examples of forced mobility in the Global South, including both contemporary and historical perspectives.

Rapid deployment of wind and solar energy generation is going to result in a series of new problems with regards to the reliability of our electrical grid in terms of outages, cost, and life-time, forcing us to promptly deal with the challenging restructuring of our energy systems. Increased penetration of fluctuating renewable energy resources is a challenge for the electrical grid. Proposing solutions to deal with this problem also impacts the functionality of large generators. The power electronic generator interactions, multi-domain modelling, and reliable monitoring systems are examples of new challenges in this field. In 2003-2006, Patricia Henderson lived in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal where she recorded the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS. In this illuminating study, she recounts the concerns of rural people and explores local repertoires through which illness was folded into everyday life. The book spans a period when antiretroviral medication was not available, and moves on to a time when the treatment became accessible. Hope gradually became manifest in the recovery of a number of people through antiretroviral therapies and 'the return' of bodies they could recognise as their own. This research implies that protracted interaction with people over time, offers insights into the unfolding textures of everyday life, in particular in its focus on suffering, social and structural inequality, illness, violence, mourning, sensibility, care and intimacy.

Alexander Williamson was professor of chemistry at UCL (1849–87) and a leading scientist of his time. He taught and cared for visiting Japanese students, thereby assisting them with their goal of modernising Japan. This short, accessible biography explores his contribution to nineteenth-century science as well as his lasting impact on Japanese society. In 1863 five students from the Chōshū clan, with a desperate desire to learn from the West, made their way to England. They were put in the care of Williamson and his wife. Their mission was to learn about cutting-edge Western technology, science, economics and politics. When they returned home they rapidly became leading figures in Japanese life at a particularly turbulent time, one of them serving as the country’s first prime minister. Subsequently many other Japanese students followed in their footsteps and studied at UCL. The remarkable story of the part Williamson and UCL played in the modernisation of Japan is little known today. This biography will promote a deeper understanding of Williamson’s scientific innovations and his legacy for Anglo-Japanese relations. An afterword briefly outlines the extraordinary careers of the pioneering students after they left Britain.

The main challenge in wastewater treatment is changing the perception of wastewater as a waste product to be treated or disposed of, and instead seeing it as a source of energy and other valuable byproducts. This approach is in line with the basic principles of a circular economy, which replaces the ‘end-of-life’ concept with reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovering materials in production, distribution and consumption processes. The anaerobic treatment of wastewater aligns with these goals: energy, safe water and nutrients can all be recovered in the process. As a result, the anaerobic process could represent the best mainstream treatment option for domestic wastewater. The development of powerful technologies such as high-rate and membrane reactors is making anaerobic wastewater treatment more viable, especially in cold and moderate climate regions where the process is made more challenging due to the low process efficiency for dilute streams such as domestic wastewaters. Human sound localization helps to pay attention to spatially separated speakers using interaural level and time differences as well as angle-dependent monaural spectral cues. In a monophonic teleconference, for instance, it is much more difficult to distinguish between different speakers due to missing binaural cues. Spatial positioning of the speakers by means of binaural reproduction methods using head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) enhances speech comprehension. These HRTFs are influenced by the torso, head and ear geometry as they describe the propagation path of the sound from a source to the ear canal entrance. Through this geometry-dependency, the HRTF is directional and subject-dependent. To enable a sufficient reproduction, individual HRTFs should be used. However, it is tremendously difficult to measure these HRTFs. For this reason this thesis proposes approaches to adapt the HRTFs applying individual anthropometric dimensions of a user. Since localization at low frequencies is mainly influenced by the interaural time difference, two models to adapt this difference are developed and compared with existing models. Furthermore, two approaches to adapt the spectral cues at higher frequencies are studied, improved and compared. Although the localization performance with individualized HRTFs is slightly worse than with individual HRTFs, it is nevertheless still better than with non-individual HRTFs, taking into account the measurement effort.

Damit Lehramtsstudierende Lehr-Lernprozesse so gestalten, dass bei Lernenden Erkenntnisprozesse initiiert und unterstützt werden, müssen sie sich vertieft mit den Fachinhalten auseinandersetzen. Die Identifizierung von lernbedeutsamen Zusammenhängen und die Übertragung in Lernschritte sind für Studierende nachweislich schwierig. Daher werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit Verstehens -prozesse von Lehramtsstudierenden bei der Erschließung eines komplexen fachlichen Sachverhaltes und dessen fachdidaktische Verwertung untersucht. Dazu wurde eine Fallstudie mit N ,= ,14 Versuchspersonen durchgeführt, für die ein leitfragenstütztes Lehr-Lernkonzept entwickelt wurde, um eine Vertretungsstunde für einen Leistungskurs Chemie zur Auswertung der Analyse eines Farbstoffgemisches zu erarbeiten. Zur Erschließung der inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge wurden englische Lehrbuchtexte (nachweislich weniger lückenhaft in ihren Argumentationslinien als deutsche) eingesetzt. Ausgewertet wurden die Antworten zu den Leitfragen. Die Auswertung erfolgte mit einem auf Propositionen aufbauenden Kategoriensystem. Die Studierenden haben nur teilweise die relevanten Textpassagen eigenständig erkannt. Entscheidend waren die fachlichen Voraussetzungen. Eine Zunahme im fachlichen Verständnis wirkte sich positiv auf die fachdidaktische Verwertung des erworbenen Wissens aus. Folglich sind für die Lehre leitfragenstützte Lehr-Lernkonzepte, auch unter Einbindung englischer Lehrbuchtexte, für eine vertiefte Wissensverarbeitung zu empfehlen.

Obra climatológica que oferece tratamento dinâmico às questões climáticas do Mato Grosso do Sul, principalmente à circulação atmosférica regional e às implicações pluviais. Considerando-se que tal região, a exemplo do que ocorre com o território paulista, encontra-se na confluência dos principais sistemas atmosféricos da América do Sul, possuindo mais de um tipo de regime pluviométrico (áreas com regime do tipo "Brasil Central" e outras com regime do tipo "Brasil Meridional"), o autor deste livro procura compreender a relevância de estudos que privilegiam a distribuição das chuvas como um dos indicadores do seu "mosaico" climático. Para tanto descreve as chuvas anuais, sazonais e mensais do período de 1966 a 1985 e, depois, as chuvas diárias do triênio 1983-1985, analisando-as do ponto de vista rítmico. Trata-se de um estudo original, uma vez que se fundamenta na dinâmica das massas de ar, isto é, das cadeias fundamentais dos tipos de tempo, dos mecanismos frontológicos e dos ritmos pluviais, metodologia que possibilitou não apenas entrever as relações atmosfera-território sulmatogrossense como, também, propor uma classificação climática de base genética, ainda que sob a forma de "tentativa".

Standards für den allgemeinbildenden Unterricht in den Sekundarstufen sind institutionell implementiert und ihre Wirkungen gut erforscht. Für den berufsbildenden naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht, etwa im Bereich Körperpflege, gilt das bislang nicht. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden forschungsbasierte Standards für das Fach Körperpflege im Berufsbild Friseur:in formuliert. Dazu wurden N = 29 Lehrkräfte aus dem Bereich Körperpflege in acht leitfadengestützten Fokusgruppen-Interviews zu fachdidaktischen Aspekten des Unterrichtens in Friseur:innenklassen befragt. Die Interviews wurden mit der inhaltlich-strukturierenden qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Kuckartz (2018) ausgewertet und die Ergebnisse anschließend in einer Fragebogenerhebung mit weiteren Körperpflege-Lehrkräften (N = 34) validiert. Aus der Analyse der Interviews und den Ergebnissen der Fragebogenerhebung wurden Standards abgeleitet. Durch dieses Vorgehen konnten 40 Standards in sieben fachdidaktischen Facetten definiert werden. Drei Facetten bilden dabei das Kernelement des Unterrichtens in Friseur:innenklassen: Das Wissen über die Zusammensetzung der Schüler:innenschaft, das Wissen über die spezifischen Vermittlungsstrategien und das Wissen über die Lernziele des Faches. Außerdem zeigt sich eine authentische Ausrichtung an konkreten Handlungen im Berufsbild als essentiell für eine Fachdidaktik Körperpflege. Die Formulierung von Standards trägt zur fachdidaktischen Fundierung eines kompetenzorientierten Unterrichts in Friseur:innenklassen bei.

Asset management issues are and will always be key concerns for many stakeholders in the water sector. Despite this, there is still a lack of awareness and clear guidance on the topic. There has been some focus on the management of drainage pipes, but more effort needs to be dedicated to examining the various regulations, practices, and research within this discipline. It’s paramount to consider the long-term management of urban drainage assets, given the role they play in ensuring the wellbeing of our communities. Asset Management of Urban Drainage Systems is the first comprehensive handbook that deals with the asset management of infrastructure dedicated to both sewage and stormwater, including blue-green infrastructure. Objektivität ist ein Stilmerkmal - strategisch eingesetzt und historisch wandelbar. Die kultur- und geschichtswissenschaftliche Forschung hat die Geschichte der Objektivität zunehmend zum Thema gemacht, dabei aber die Berührungslinien zwischen Kunst und Naturwissenschaft nur wenig beachtet. Tatsächlich aber hatten die Kunsthistoriker, Mediziner, Schriftsteller und Künstler des 19. Jh. ein gemeinsames Thema: die Suche nach dem »wahren Bild«. Was künstlerische Wahrheit sei und was ein wissenschaftliches Verfahren ausmache, wurde in aller Breite sowohl in der Kunst als auch in den Wissenschaften diskutiert. Die beiden kulturellen Figuren des 'Künstlers' und des 'Wissenschaftlers' konturierten sich dabei parallel zu einem zeitgenössischen Geschlechterdiskurs, der in die neue Bestimmung von Objektivität mit einfloss. Der Band behandelt die Vorgeschichte der heutigen Trennung von Kunst und Wissenschaft und ist zugleich ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der visuellen Objektivität.

How are human computation systems developed in the field of citizen science to achieve what neither humans nor computers can do alone? Through multiple perspectives and methods, Libuse Hannah Veprek examines the imagination of these assemblages, their creation, and everyday negotiation in the interplay of various actors and play/science entanglements at the edge of AI. Focusing on their human-technology relations, this ethnographic study shows how these formations are marked by intraversions, as they change with technological advancements and the actors' goals, motivations, and practices. This work contributes to the constructive and critical ethnographic engagement with human-AI assemblages in the making.
